Joyce Chen 51-0662 Saladacco Spiral Slicer, White Review

Joyce Chen 51-0662 Saladacco Spiral Slicer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had to give this product two stars for the concept and at least one star because it does exactly what the manufacturer says it does, but nothing more plus not everything you make using this product turns out completely awful. Versatile this tool is not! To start your vegetables must be 1-inch in diameter and 3-1/2 inches in length. After you've finished cutting you are left with at least 1-inch of unuseable vegetable, unless you're willing to do the rest of your creative cutting by hand, not only does this limit you but it also creates a great deal of waste. You have only 2 blade choices which are housed in a poorly constructed plastic contraption that easily separates if pressed on in the wrong spot.
You have your choice of either Spaghetti type strands or spiral slices but don't expect anything pretty with your spaghetti strands because your only option is a very fine tooth edged blade which creates very fine strands of mush depending on what you're cutting. However, this product does have one redeeming trait and that's with the use of the flat edged blade it does create fairly nice looking spiral slices. If you're expecting true versatility than you will have to cough up the dough for "The Benriner Cooks Helper", "Benriner Cook Help" or the "Benriner Asian Sprial Slicer" (they're all the same) which gives you (3) Tooth edged blades (fine, medium and Coarse) as well as (1) flat edged blade, the size of your vegetables do still matter for cutting but you don't throw away nearly as much. Shop around for the best price!

Make professional garnishes in minutes with the Joyce Chen Spiral Slicer. It quickly creates spiral strands, ribbons, or slices and collects them in a clear plastic catch tray. The spiral slicer's design keeps fingers safely away from the cutting surface, providing confidence and efficiency in food preparation. Made from a durable plastic, the slicer is safe to clean in the dishwasher. It measures 9-1/2 inches tall and comes gift-boxed.

Char-Broil 06401206 Grill-2-Go Advantage Portable Outdoor Gas Grill Review

Char-Broil 06401206 Grill-2-Go Advantage Portable Outdoor Gas Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I purchased this grill I was looking for the Char-Broil Fire & Ice Grill (the one with the cooler below); however they have discontinued it for some weird reason. So I researched this one for my tailgate and decided to give it a try. I normally use charcoal however it is such a mess and the smoke blows over into others tailgates which is a little rude.
PROS: Great portable grill; love the side tables; 16 oz propane tank lasted hours (which is very nice); cute little extras like a flag and extra propane tank holder, a holder for paper towels and a holder for the propane tank in use; LED lights are a nice touch; very light considering how large this grill is; has a Non-Stick Teflon coated griddle (good for breakfast items); has a grease collector under the grill; has an ignitior, very easy to setup and start cooking
CONS: You have to assemble this grill out of the box (takes about an hour) and this was disappointing;
MOST DISAPPOINTING FEATURE...you cannot just extend the legs of the base and start grilling, you must take the grill off, extend the legs and set the grill on top of the base, this again applies if you want to collapse the grill, you must take the grill off the base collapse the legs and place the grill back on top; does not have a propane gauge letting you know how much gas is left; make sure it is on a level surface, we tried to make scrambled eggs and they ran off the griddle down to the bottom of the grill
Overall if you can catch this grill on sale it is worth the money (purchased mine for around $160 on Amazon). I still believe a $200 grill should have some extra features like a propane gauge, and the grill should be able to setup without taking it on and off the base.
***PS:Thermos sells a carrying bag for the Grill 2 Go; however it does NOT fit this model. You can fit the grill but not the legs. Returned the carrying bag to Amazon and had my $40 refunded.***

Designed with on-the-go grillers in mind, this collapsible gas grill with wheels works as well on the back deck or patio as it does at the beach, campsite, or a tailgating party. The unit provides open-flame grilling with two independently controlled stainless-steel burners, 16,000 BTUs of heat, and a 308-square-inch cooking surface with porcelain-coated cooking grates for anything from hot dogs and hamburgers to salmon fillets, slabs of fresh pineapple, and veggie shish-kabobs. Even more, its nonstick Teflon-coated 140-square-inch griddle makes pancakes and eggs possible, even in the great outdoors. The grill can be used as a standard unit with dual locking legs or as a tabletop grill by removing the grill body; it operates using either a 1-pound LP cylinder or a 20-pound LP tank with an optional adapter. It also comes with a rotary ignition, a die-cast aluminum grill base, and a removable grease drawer for quick cleanup. Other highlights include folding side shelves with tool hooks and a carrying handle, a paper-towel holder, an onboard storage bin and trash-bag holder, a flag holder, and an LED light that attaches to the handle for grilling in the dark (light requires four AA batteries, not included). When finished grilling, the two-piece porcelain cooking grate cleans up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. The portable gas grill measures 21 by 56 by 34-1/4 inches fully assembled and 33 by 21 by 20 inches when folded.

Haier HVT12ABS 12-Bottle-Capacity Table-Top Wine Cellar, Black with Silver Trim Review

Haier HVT12ABS 12-Bottle-Capacity Table-Top Wine Cellar, Black with Silver Trim
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me start by addressing the other reviews that have been critical of the quality of the Haier Tabletop Wine Cellar. I've used mine for over a month with no issues, and I believe I may have an explanation for others' perceived problems. The unit works by cycling a cooling fan on and off as needed, so it doesn't continuously run like most refrigerators do. Also, its thermostat is extremely particular, i.e. if it senses that it's cold enough, you can't turn it down low enough to force the fan to kick on. Finally, remember that this is a wine cooler, not a mini-fridge, and that wine isn't meant to be kept as cold as other beverages. We have our unit stored in a pantry on the coldest corner of our house and it keeps the wine right while barely running the fan. These circumstances could lead to a misperception that the unit has completely stopped working when in fact, it's just accurately having an "off" cycle. If my Wine Cellar ever does truly stop working, I'll certainly update this review.
Potential dependability issues aside, there are still critical problems with the Tabletop Wine Cellar that keep it from being a realistic solution for most people. The most immediate one is size - when you pull it out of the box, you'll scratch your head wondering whether or not you really picked up the model for "Tabletop" use. Somewhere in the world, counters must be much deeper than where I live! I can't verify the dimensions that are quoted above, but the depth seems suspiciously small. Plus, the instructions for the unit specify that it needs several inches of clearance on the back and sides for ventilation. Taking this additional space into consideration, the Cellar is about the size of a microwave oven but much deeper. Our solution was to put it sideways on a microwave cart in a separate room; however, having to do so is a pretty big deviation from the way that it's advertised. In case you're planning on building it into a cabinet or bar as a workaround, the instructions prohibit that as well (again for ventilation concerns).
The second issue is that even as big as the Wine Cellar is on the outside, it's ironically cramped on the inside. Any bottle bigger than 750 mL will not fit unless you remove one of the wire racks, thus reducing it to an eight-bottle capacity (four 750 and four larger ones). Even if you stick with the standard bottle volume, some unusually-shaped bottles will still not fit. For instance, we found that the extra tall, skinny bottles of Chateau Ste. Michel have to be put in diagonally so that basically only one bottle fits per shelf and then you've got to be careful that it doesn't roll out when you open the door.
On the positive side, the unit is very quiet - even when the fan is running, it's no louder than the fan on a new PC. It's also attractively styled in black with the appearance of a brushed pewter frame for the glass door. The door seal and hinge both feel solid and sturdy. The thermostat actually does result in a range of temperatures, but this of course precludes storing white and red together.
To sum up, the Haier Wine Cellar attempts to do the impossible - providing a chiller spacious enough for a case of wine yet compact enough to fit neatly on a kitchen countertop - but ultimately can't quite do it. I haven't experienced any of the motor failure problems that others have described (yet); mine has been a reliable performer. Unfortunately, the additional workaround of where to keep the unit and what to do about the bottles that won't fit in it reduce the Wine Cellar to much less than a hassle-free solution.
PROS
* Cooling fan is very quiet when running
* Accurate thermostat provides a range of temperatures for whites vs. reds
CONS
* Way too large to realistically sit on any countertop
* Can't accommodate large or unusually-shaped wine bottles

Keep up to 12 bottles of red or white wine properly chilled and ready to enjoy with the help of this convenient table-top wine cellar. The unit's thermo-electric cooling system, which involves very few moving parts, delivers ultra-quiet, energy-efficient operation and protects wine from unnecessary vibration. Even more, thermo-electric cooling does not use ozone-depleting chemicals such as CFCs or HCFCs, which means it's better for the environment. The wine cellar also provides an adjustable thermostat, which allows for precisely controlling the internal temperature to ensure excellent results. Other highlights include a silver-trimmed, double-pane insulated glass door for viewing contents at a glance, a recessed door handle for a sleek look, and three full-chrome wire storage racks that make it possible to keep stored wine neatly organized. Great for those who love to entertain or for wine enthusiasts with a growing collection, the wine cellar, which measures 22-5/16 by 18-1/8 by 16 inches, makes a wonderful addition to any countertop or bar area.

Waring Pro CO1500B Professional 1.5-Cubic-Foot Convection Oven Review

Waring Pro CO1500B Professional 1.5-Cubic-Foot Convection Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you want a real counter top oven do not waste your money on a microwave, for healthy cooking, baking and eating a convection is the best.
This oven is everything I have been looking for; great capacity, convection, stainless steel interior, excellent price and good looks. It bakes, and browns and roasts, and broils. It is easy to use.
I just cannot get a properly made one, the oven seal fell off the first one and one of the racks was broken. So i sent it back for a replacement. Got the replacement and the convection fan is much loader than the first, sounds ready to break, the oven seal falls off again and the door is not flush, you can see the hot air leaks.
Back she goes, again.
....also Amazon informs me that they have heard of problems with this model and will not be replacing it a third time. So there you have it.
If you can get a good one (I still cannot vouch for its longevity); you may luck up.

Oster 2-Speed 250-Watt Hand Blenders Review

Oster 2-Speed 250-Watt Hand Blenders
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The bottom line first: don't buy this piece of garbage. With far better choices on the market, such as the Cuisinart, the value equation just doesn't work out.
Another reviewer says that this works fine as long as you're not using it for ice. Well, I was trying to puree a soup made with fully cooked (soft) vegetables and chicken broth. What could possibly be easier than that? The shaft broke after a minute of use.
Even in this era of disposable "Made in China" stuff I couldn't believe it, so I read and reread the instructions to make sure it wasn't something I did wrong. In this case -- Oster, it's not me, it's you. After you look at the inside of this thing, it's easy to see why it broke. The shaft is so cheap and flimsy, it's a joke. Tiny gears made of the cheapest plastic drive the blade, they stand no chance of holding up.
I purchased a Cuisinart CSB-33BC Quick Prep Hand Blender after this thing disintegrated. The Cuisinart has been great so far. The materials are superior to the Oster. The nylon bottom can be used with confidence with any cookware. My primary use is to puree soups in the pot, rather than go through the messy process of transferring the hot liquid to my blender. So far, the same use that killed the Oster in a minute hasn't bothered the Cuisinart one bit.
Even if this Oster product works for some folks, why not buy a better product when the cost is the same? If you're not convinced, just go to a store where you can get your hands on this thing and the Cuisinart and a few other competitors. In comparison, the Oster looks like it should be an accessory for a kid's Easy Bake Oven set, not a serious tool for the kitchen.

Deluxe 28 Bottle Wine Cooler Refrigerator Review

Deluxe 28 Bottle Wine Cooler Refrigerator

I am writing this review because of my extreme dissatisfaction with the Edgestar wine refrigeration product line and Compact Appliances. Two years ago my husband purchased the Edgestar 28-bottle fridge for me as a Christmas gift. We were so excited with the product that we raved to everyone about it. The following Christmas it was all my parents wanted. We purchased the smaller 16-bottle Edgestar for them. Not two weeks later ours died (right after the one-year warranty). My husband is quite handy and called to purchase various parts to repair the unit--over $100 worth--to no avail. We were devastated to throw away a brand new unit just one year after our purchase. I spoke with my parents last night and found to their utter disappointment now theirs has died too--just one year after we purchased it for them. This is TWO units that died immediately after a one-year period! These products are not inexpensive and were a costly investment to preserve our favorite wines. We are disappointed in the quality of the items and have vowed to never purchase again from Compact Appliances. We are also planning to warn all of our wine-loving friends in the wine classes we attend to not purchase the products as well. What a disappointing Christmas!

Cut through hard or soft foods without crushing or smashing using this cordless rechargeable knife. Its powerful high-torque motor moves the stainless-steel blades back and forth hundreds of times a minute for clean, even slices. Each custom-engineered blade set features over 70 serrated edges, which greatly amplify the slicing power of the knife--no need to push down on the blade or saw at food. The unit provides a bio-ergonomically engineered, ultra-lightweight body, perfectly balanced for accurate slicing, plus a padded nonslip grip for total comfort. Its conveniently placed power switch can be activated by a touch of the finger, while the integrated "safety lock" helps protect against unintentional start-up.
The knife remains fully charged and ready at all times thanks to its patented charging block. With its ultra-strong rechargeable battery, the knife can go anywhere in the kitchen and beyond--the outdoor barbeque, the patio, the dining room--even fishing and camping. Its "five-in-one" blade functions as an all-around blade for slicing meats, veggies, fish, fruit, or precision cutting, while the "micro-slicer" blade works wonders on slicing even the most delicate foods, such as breads and angel food cakes, as well as solid, dense foods like blocks of hard cheese or lunchmeat. To clean, the blades can simply be wiped with a clean damp towel after light use or they can be washed in hot, soapy water or in the dishwasher; dry all blades thoroughly before storing or next use. The handle and charging block clean up easily with a damp cloth. The electric knife measures approximately 10 by 8 by 12 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Waring Pro FS150 Food Slicer Review

Waring Pro FS150 Food Slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This thing slices well, then comes the impractical task of trying to clean it. The tray does not detatch from the base, which cannot be put in water because it containes the motor. Pieces of food work their way into the motor area. After removing the blade (using tools) you must remove a plastic cover with 3 screws and dig out the pieces of food. I could not believe how bad a design it was from a cleaning standpoint. The tray that slides back and forth with the food has a stainless top that is literally two-faced taped onto the plastic base. This was very poor from a quality standpoint, and came off in my hand the first and only time used. The plastic base for this tray has about fifty little half inch square honey-comb sort of areas that grease from meat or juices from food WILL get down into. This thing is a nightmare to adequately clean and not worth the trouble. It went back to the store immediately, and it was not all the way clean because after about thirty minutes I gave up. I'm looking for another brand now.

Black & Decker EK700 9-Inch Electric Carving Knife, White Review

Black and Decker EK700 9-Inch Electric Carving Knife, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Perhaps the first reviewer had a defective knife because I can only give this inexpensive little knife the very highest recommendation. Initially, I had purchased a very (in my opinion) expensive electric knife ($65) which lasted all of, what? Two months? Yup, two months. Since I couldn't really afford to drop that kind of cash so soon again on an electric knife I got the Black & Decker EK700, not expecting it to last for very long because on average I bake at least a dozen loaves of bread a week, half of which are heavy wheat or rye breads.
As of today, February 28, 2008, I'm editing this review to make this comment: I used this knife for about a year before I posted my original review and it is STILL WORKING! Honestly, how can you beat that? I am really amazed at how sturdy it is. With the use I put it through I would have expected it to last no more than six months. But after all this time, with steady, hard use, it's running almost as well as the day I bought it. Great knife, unbelievably sturdy, easy to clean -- frankly, I can't think of anything bad to say about it. Highly recommended.

Its nonslip handle affords unparalleled comfort and security, while its safety lock prevents potential injury caused by accidental starts. Additional highlights include a flush-cut blade design, nonslip tabs for easy blade removal and quick cleanup, and a compact design that stashes neatly in a drawer when not in use. This mandoline slicer was a disappointment. It is very difficult to operate, especially when slicing tougher vegetables like butternut squash or even onions. I purchased my original Private Reserve Wine Cellar, Model CWC-1200, in November, 2007 through Amazon.com.
I was having persistent condensation problems with the unit, so I returned it under warranty and received a new unit just a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I am having the same problem with the new unit. The plastic tray at the bottom of the unit fills up with water within a couple of days. I have the unit in an air conditioned room. I can't believe I am the only person having this problem, although Cuisinart would have me believe that.

Waring Pro MG100 Meat Grinder Review

Waring Pro MG100 Meat Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I noticed some negative customer reviews for this item; its due to lack of food experience. This machine works very well, however, you do have to compensate for the fact that it's a home machine and it has a small feeding tube. You cannot put your average sized 1 inch/1 inch cube into the feeding tube. Yes, it will fit, but no it wont do a good job. Think about it, the big industrial machines take cubes that size. You also cannot run the machine without a steady flow of meat or have it running on empty. One of the reviews said that the machine burned out on the first try. Probably an overexageration but these machines will burn out if you run it on empty of do not keep a steady flow going through the feeding tube.
I have been using a hand grinder for several months and although it made my arms look good, the job was really really tough and a lot of waste...due to the huge auger. This machine was a blessing; just be reasonable, and calm about using it, and the job will come out perfectly. Happy grinding and cheers to any and all who are out there honing and preseving the craft.

It lasted about a month before it broke. It would not latch onto the cans any longer. It was heavy, solid, made by what I thought was a quality brand name, and it would not work. What a disappointment. But I was confident Cuisinart would set things right, so I e-mailed them.
Wow, what an eye opener about this company! I was told I had to MAIL this heavy object back to them ON MY DIME. Brand new, less than 2 months old, broken and not working, and I am supposed to lay out the heft shipping fee over and above the expensive price tag, which would only be worth the money if the product actually worked.
End of the story, we bought another can opener and it is working fine so far. Eventually it will break as well, nothing is made with any substance any more. We really thought the Cuisinart would last, and if there were any problems at such an early stage they would ship out a replacement, brand new, and prepay the postage for the return like truly reputable companies I have dealt with in the past.
This unit is defective, and their customer service stinks. Save your money, it does not live up to the image, and if you buy it you will get stuck with the postage bill trying to return it. We refused to throw good money after bad, so we are eating the cost. But we now know better than to buy another Cuisinart product in our lifetimes, so that is worth something to us at least.

Cuisinart CDF-100 Compact 1.1-Liter Deep Fryer, Brushed Stainless Steel Review

Wow, I'm a big fan of fried foods, homemade french fries especially fried in Canola Oil. I've used industrial restaurant sized fryers and worked from a stove top. This little puppy is probably one of the best little friers I've ever seen.
Most of the negative view of this fryer can be solved by simply reading the instruction booklet. Number one complaint, the cord falls off. Well yes it does, and that is by design. The cord is held into it's socket on the fryer side with a magnet. This is so you can unplug the unit without pulling the fryer over and burning yourself with hot oil. It's a common mistake, thinking the cord is broken. If you plug this in, attach the magnet end and don't move the frier, it will not come unplugged.
Number two complaint, the basket is flimsy and falls over itself. It does not do that if you install the handle correctly. You have to squeeze the two sides and slip the pins into two holes and under a tab - the handle will never ever move in this position.
Here's what I love about this appliance, it uses a small amount of oil - around a quart / liter. We don't have fried foods very often, and I don't cook a whole chicken at once. It's just perfect for those side dishes - appetizer mozzarella sticks, egg rolls, jalapeno poppers, etc. You can do chicken fingers, fish sticks, donuts in here. Food cooks evenly and quickly. Heat up time is around 3 or 4 minutes. Cooking time varies a lot, but can be around 3 or 4 minutes.
The cover is ingeneous - it closes down tight around the top and the basket so no splashing of oil happens. Cook on the counter top with no fear of splashing oil everywhere. The carbon filter shouldn't be cleaned every use, and it prevents splashes from coming out of the lid. The clear window, can see that oil will cloud that up over time, but it's handy to see inside.
Frankly, I love this unit. It's well built, solid construction, feels good in use. Cuisinart built a good small fryer in this unit.

Easily make fried chicken, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, or doughnuts with this deep fryer from Cuisinart. By filling to the maximum oil capacity of 1.1 liters, the unit's extra-wide fry basket can accommodate batches up to 3/4 of a pound. Food items float freely for crispy, even cooking, and the fryer's nonstick die-cast frying bowl includes an attached heating element to maintain selected oil temperatures for restaurant-quality results. The 1650-watt deep fryer comes equipped with an adjustable thermostat for temperatures ranging from 325 to 375 degrees F, and the timer can be set for up to 30 minutes. The deep fryer's removable fry basket rests on the basket clip to allow fried foods to drain and cool so there's no excess, clinging oil. For healthier cooking, it fries more food using less oil than most conventional fryers. Other highlights include a removable charcoal filter to trap odors when frying and a dishwasher-safe lid, fry basket, and basket handle for quick cleanup. Housed in brushed stainless steel, the space-saving deep fryer measures 11-1/4 by 8-1/4 by 7-2/5 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

Cuisinart CCJ-100 Citrus Pro Juicer Review

Cuisinart CCJ-100 Citrus Pro Juicer

You'd think it would be hard to mess up when designing an item that just juices halved citrus fruit, but they did. And how! There are three annoying features about this machine that interact to provide a supremely annoying user experience.
The first annoying feature about this juicer is that the pour spout juts out a mere 1/4 inch from the side of the machine. Since the machine is rounded and somewhat urn-shaped (fatter on top than on the bottom), you have very little space to get a glass or measuring cup near the body of the machine in order to catch the juice. Keep in mind that some measuring glasses can be rather thick, and you can easily see that this might be a bit of a problem.
Now for the other two problems. I should note that this machine has a decent amount of torque, and can indeed ream out a citrus fruit rather efficiently, leaving nothing but rind. The problem is the three little rubber feet on the bottom cannot stand up to the machine's torque. Push a fruit down on the top and the entire machine jerks to the side, whereupon the spout flinches away from its tiny area of proper juice-dispensing, and juice meets counter. You have to exert a considerable amount of force when pushing down the fruit just to get the thing to stay put. I had to use both hands to do this (one holding the lemon down, one pushing against the side of the machine, leaving none for the measuring cup). It's not an insignificant amount of force; you really have to brace your arms on the thing to keep it still.
Thus comes the third problem, which is the auto-reverse mechanism. About the second or third time you push down on the fruit and activate the machine, it goes the other way (clockwise instead of counterclockwise) in order to get more pulp and juice out of the fruit. However, I haven't figured out how to tell which direction it's going to go next (it's not a simple first time this way, next time that way), so when it decides to change, the machine jerks in the opposite direction of where you were expecting it to go. This operates in opposition to the force you are exerting on the side of the machine trying to keep it from moving. Again, hilarity ensues.
So, all in all, I am NOT impressed with this juicer. Unfortunately, it was the only one at the store. Perhaps another company will see the opportunity here and dare to make a juicer that does not have such an impressively compounded collection of design flaws.
