Chops firmer stuff like onions, bell peppers, etc. pretty well. Gotta be careful not to underestimate # of chops, then chop more if pieces too big. Otherwise a couple or three extra chops can result in a semi-puree!
Cleanup is pretty easy and quick.
Cons -
Useless for mushrooms, which is one of the things I need to chop most often - the pieces of mushrooms get wedged in between the blades, which prevents the blades from being lifted all the way back up for the next chopping motion. I had to use a couple of different small utensils to get in between the blades and unwedge the pieces.
Reassembly would be a breeze except for one thing - there's a piece with cutouts that slides over the blades and keeps the chopped pieces from getting in the chopping mechanism, and you have to slide it off the blades for cleanup, then slide it back on over the blades to reassemble. The PROBLEM is that there's very little wiggle room in the cutouts on that piece, and the material of the piece is a bit pliable, so the cutout spaces get compressed, making it a ROYAL PAIN to get it to line up properly to slide back up over the blades. I worked out a way that has it a bit easier, but it took a bit of trial and error, I'd explain it but I think it's not worth the trouble.
Thankfully I got it for only 5 bucks on sale at CVS/Pharmacy, so not such a terrible loss.

(More customer reviews)This is the worst piece I own by Cuisinart. I generally like their products but this thing stinks. My girlfriend bought me this for X-Mas (after I picked it out!). Let me say that I would give it negative stars if possible. I now have to waste time and fuel to drive it back to the store to recuperate the cost. The thing fell apart after 1/8 of an onion--which is, btw, all the space this thing has to chop. Was not sharp enough to cut through the tougher, outer onion layer. P-l-e-a-s-e! I took it all the way apart to see what could possibly "jam" a manual food chopper. I noticed that the blade piece unscrewed from the hand piece. No problem, right? Wrong, wrong! The pieces would not stay together. Needless to say that it almost ruined X-Mas once my girlfriend had to go digging through the trash for the receipt . . .

Slap Chop with Graty - Food Chopping Machine Review

(More customer reviews)The slap chop and graty are tools...and like any tool, they have their benefits and their drawbacks. I now have these, a v-slicer, and a regular food processor. I use the food processor for large batch jobs, the v-slicer when I am slicing large foods, and the slap-chop when I want to chop small batches.
First, you have to read the instructions and make sure the locking ring (the black bit just under the plunger) is locked down. If it doesn't feel like it's engaging, check to make sure you're turning it the right way. Also, don't overload the chamber. If it feels flimsy, you haven't put it back together properly.
Like any manual tool you have to get a feel for it. When I started with mine, I had some trouble at times.
The upshot: you have a tool that does as well as a powered mini-chopper (if not better, you get finer control), and it's dishwasher safe and cleans thoroughly. Unlike the infomercial, you do have to clean between jobs, but if you have a sink sprayer, you can rinse off the gunk if you're going to use it immediately. Otherwise, you break it down, put it in the dishwasher, and run it.
On the graty: this has so far surpassed my Zyliss crank grater for medium cheeses (cheddar, monterey jack, etc). The Zyliss will still be good for hard cheeses like parmesan, but the graty now works best for cheddar on nachos or chili. There is one thing to remember...if you want results like in the infomercial, REMOVE THE COTTER PIN. You can do without it, and if it turns out I'm wrong, you can get replacements at most hardware stores.

Expectation management is important when dealing with these mini-choppers. I have a Vidalia Chop Wizard which is perfect for large amounts of various vegetables, onions, etc. If you only need a small amount this food chopper is both convenient and useful. However you must limit the size of the food you are chopping to perhaps a one to one and one half inches in length and probably no more than about 3/4 of an inch in height. You must also pound the unit with some force to get it to really work effectively. I have carefully watched the Slap Chop infomercial ($27.95 with shipping and handling and an additional $7.95 S&H for the "Graty") and with camera angles that commercial creates a bit of a false sense of just what these products can and can't do. Several people have commented on how difficult this unit is to clean. The cleaning instructions on the box say "Remove container ring and carefully wash with soap and water." This has to be the most misleading and dumb instruction ever! The unit easily disassembles however the instructions on the box offer no assistance whatsoever.
What you need to do is first separate the food container from the unit by twisting the clear plastic container counterclockwise about one inch then pull down. This separates the food container from the cutting unit. Next depress the plunger approximately 3/4 of the way and then twist the sweeper/cover to the right or left pulling down until it separates from the remaining unit. This exposes the blades. You are now fully disassembled and ready to quickly clean and reassemble the unit.
The unit is dishwasher safe (top of DW only). You can use the unit with or without the base however with the base on the unit the food is all captured in the food container rather than on the cutting board.
From my observation this unit appears to be essentially a quality copy of the Pampered Chef chopper at about 1/2 the price. It uses a W wedge blade that rotates and also includes a scraper for the side of the food container unit so that the food doesn't build up on the side. This does not work perfectly but is a nice touch. With a litle practice and with the food size limitation mentioned above you can quickly learn the various techniques required for each of the foods you wish to chop. With a little more practice and some good camera angels who knows, you might end up doing a "Slap Chop" commercial for your friends only with a unit that costs less and works just as well. Just don't throw it over your back into the sink.
To recap, this is a very good mini chopper so long as your expectations are in line with the product's capabilities. However, KitchenAid needs to do better with their disassembly/cleaning instructions.

The Zyliss Easy Chop can chop and mince foods into the smallest of pieces with ease. The more you press, the smaller the pieces. Onions can be minced so finely that they are nearly undetectable by sight in sauces but still add desired flavor. And, onion odors are contained! The new design, however, means that I can no longer use the Easy Chop on my cutting board as I did with the older model. All foods must be inserted in the Smart Base before chopping. The rubber bottom on the Smart Base does help prevent slipping and reduces noise but I question how long it will last with repeated washings in the dishwasher. Only time will tell.

(More customer reviews)I bought my Mom this smaller-sized chopper for nuts, herbs, onions & scallions.
The good news: It chops evenly and efficiently, with a comfy plunging action.
The bad news: you have to take the entire chopper apart in order to clean it properly. There are multiple interior pieces and lots of nooks and crannies where food particles get trapped. And if you miss anything, it will mold in place (yuck.) We regularly needed hot soapy water, a toothbrush and about 10 minutes of scrubbing to clean everything out.
OXO has a deservedly great reputation for kitchen gadgets; this one needs a redesign for simplicity and easier cleaning.
