(More customer reviews)I got this as a gift, but I'm considering returning it after three days of use. The concept is excellent. The ease of use is excellent.
However, it's a virtually useless gadget. The motor is seriously underpowered and has a lot of trouble grating hard cheeses like parmesan. I tried using both drums, in case the finer drum was 'too fine', but it still took about 3 minutes to grate about 1/4 cup of cheese with the coarse drum.
For now, I'm sticking with my Microplane.

Progressive International HG-85 6-Piece Grater Set Review

(More customer reviews)First, I'll tell you that I've only used this product once so far. It was yesterday. I used the slicer plate to prepare onions and peppers for a stir fry. It did what it was supposed to do fairly well. The blade wasn't as sharp as I'd have liked and I think that impacted the performance a bit.
My biggest gripe with this item is that it isn't as big as the pictures make it out to be. The grating surface is actually quite narrow. So you won't be able to get large chunks of cheese or whole veggies on there unless you cut them up first.
Now onto the good: I like how you can store this thing. All the plates fit inside it nicely. When assembling, you can't put it together wrong because everything only fits together one way. Clean up after use was a snap. I didn't even have to toss it in the dish washer. Just a good rinse with some hot water and it looked like new again.
If you need some light grating, this isn't a bad way to go. It was just disappointing to get a smaller than expected product.

KitchenAid Professional Cheese/Food Mill Review

(More customer reviews)Bought one of these in my search for a good cheese grater to replace my sadly inadequate KitchenAid KG301 rotary model (see reviews on this before buying...they capture the problems well). After using this once, you have to ask: "what were they thinking?" The cutting disks can fit into the device both ways though only one way cuts, the disk is difficult to line up properly in the unit, and frankly doesn't cut well with my main use for parmigiano reggiano...it almost powders it. Worse, the circular hand motion needed to grate is fine for, say, a pepper mill for which only a small amount is needed. For this, the repetitive twisting and small yield are unacceptable.
For those of you like me who have and love the superb and unbeaten KitchenAid stand mixers, this device and the rotary grater are not in anywhere near the same quality and usefulness league.
Another cheese grater of no value to me.

Microplane Professional Patented Design Coarse Grater Review

(More customer reviews)This is the second Microplane grater that I have purchased (actually I purchased the extra coarse version), but the only 1 of the 2 that I would give a 5* rating to. The other grater was from the standard line not the professional line. With many kitchen items there are no significant differences between the two, but in this case it definitely matters!
All Microplane graters use the same basic technology for cutting -- technology which was originally developed for the woodworking industry but that has adapted for exceptional service in the kitchen as well. The razor sharp laser cut grating head will make quick & easy work of cheese grating or citrus zesting (if you have the proper size). I would suggest when choosing a size of grater that you choose 1 size larger as the sizing tends to run on the small size.
Now, what makes the professional so much better? Well, the standard line has 3 major/minor flaws: 1) the easy-grip rubber handle tends to capture water when washed, 2) the plastic molded frame holding the grating surface cracks when washed in the dishwasher, & 3) the head is so incredibly sharp that it must be kept covered, yet there is no easy way to due this except for the original tagboard cover.
The professional version fixes all of these issues. As you can see, the frame and handle are all stainless steel which eliminates issues #1 & #2 and the professional version comes with a nice snap-on plastic cover to protect the sharp head surface. In addition, the rubberized rest on the top of this version can come in very handy.
End result: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This is by far the easiest & most used kitchen gadget appliance in my house. Slicing & shredding couldn't be easier. The pieces pop into the dishwasher. No difficult instuctions, a no brainer. Until it arrives...I need to drag out my food processor to make some zucchini/carrot bread. I hate that dinosaur...plus I find the contraption scarey!!! I may have to rush that delivery!! Over the years I have given it as gifts with rave reviews. Not sure if they are sold in any stores, because I've been looking. Quick, order one....what are you waiting for????

(More customer reviews)We laughed and laughed when we received this "as seen on TV" slicing and, well, grating "miracle product" as a gift. Who would actually use such a crazy thing? Well, it turns out that we would, frequently. It may not dice, but it does slice beautifully - thin and uniform, as well as grating everything from cheese to potatoes to carrots to ... you name it. We use it almost daily. If you're a vegetable eater or a cheese lover, you won't know how you lived without it. Easy to assemble and disassemble, and it's dishwasher safe, although you do have to position the parts correctly to maximize water flow and cleaning. You can do a fine or a coarse grate, a straight or a wavy slice. You can even get an ice shaver for making snow cones. It does have some limitations. While it grates all kinds of cheeses (softer cheeses work best when chilled), it can't slice cheese at all. Nor does it slice onions, celery or other "stringy" vegetables well. It will grate them, though. It slices cucumbers, carrots, summer squash and similar vegetables beautifully, but the chute is too narrow to slice most cukes or zukes whole -- you'll have to split them lengthwise.

Microplane 40020 Grater/Zester Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this after spending 2 hours zesting limes for a gourmet cookie recipe with the traditional potato-peeler+ food processor method. The most time consuming part is carefully scraping way all the white pith on the inside of the peel. The pith is very bitter and can ruin your recipe. This zester did the same job in 30 seconds and didn't even touch the pith. Just pure, perfect lime zest with no effort. Totally worth its weight in gold. Now I can make those cookies again without my hands cramping up after hours scraping the peels. Who has time for that?
I've also started using it for grating parmesan. Definately takes Ceaser salads and pasta up a notch. I'm purchasing several more as gifts for my friends. Would make an incredible (and cheap) holiday/birthday gift for anyone, even the casual cook. Please note that the size of the grated zest or cheese is very fine and not ideal as a garnish. Parmesan or Romano grated with this tool melts quickly into the pasta, and doesn't lend much to the presentation. Tastes great, but hard to see. If you're looking for a garnishing tool, this is not it.

However, three excellent blades and a nifty storage box do come with the processor, so the extra $70.00 for these 5 seemed rather unneccesary. They will allow more functionality than the standard 3 discs enclosed with the processor, but for us, these five would have been 'over-kill'.

(More customer reviews)This thing rocks for shredding cheese! My family doesn't like the pre-shredded stuff, and loves to just grab handfuls of freshly shredded cheddar cheese to munch on. However, normally shredding cheese involved grating your knuckles in the process, and a lot of arm muscle. Enter, the Salad Shooter!
I purchased my Salad Shooter last November. I buy 2 lb bricks of Tillamook cheese, and cut them into 5 pieces so they'll fit into the chute. This is the most time consuming part of shredding cheese for me now, and it doesn't take that long! Then, I shred the cut sections of cheese. Yes, the Salad Shooter is loud, but it only takes me seconds to shred 2 pounds of cheese. So, I don't mind the noise.
Clean up is easy. A quick rinse to get the bigger bits of stuck cheese off (not sure if this is even necessary, but I do it anyway), and then everything goes in the dishwasher, except for the motor bit, and that only rarely needs a quick wipe with a paper towel. I love it.
I've probably shredded about 30 pounds of cheese with my Salad Shooter, and it's still going strong. For every family gathering, I volunteer to bring the shredded cheese.... it's just so much easier for me to do it.
*Update: October 6, 2008* I've probably shredded well over 60 lbs of cheese now with my Salad Shooter, and it still looks brand new. Since I wash everything in the dishwasher, I kept expecting rust spots to show up on the metal grating part, but there's no rust to be found. I'm very pleased!
**2nd update: July 2010** Still going strong.... I don't even want to guess how many pounds of cheese I've shredded with this Salad Shooter! :) Shredding blade cone had a hairline crack in the plastic part of it for several months but I kept using it, and now there's a bigger crack near it. Ordered a replacement cone directly from Presto this month, arrived in 4 days. I have a habit of pushing hard on the cheddar cheese in the chute, so I think that put a lot of stress on the shredding cone. 2 and a half years for that first shredding cone isn't bad, though, seeing what I put it through!

Cuisinart HFP-300 PrepExpress 220-Watt Handheld Electric Food Processors Review

(More customer reviews)I am a long-standing Cusinart food processor fan for 25 plus years. I couldn't imagine my kitchen without it. So when I discovered this product, I was sure that this would be a time-efficient way to quickly chop an onion without having to use my big Cuisinart food processor. I was confident that it would uphold Cuisinart standards for food processing. NOT THE CASE. Chopping/slicing peppers or onions was completely impossible. Very little came out of the chute as most of the vegetables were turned into a mushy pureed substance trapped between the blade and the round housing. In addition, as soon as the motor is turned on, a burnt odor is emitted leading me to think that the motor is burning out. I do not recommend this product to anyone and I am shocked that Cuisinart would put their name on this piece of junk!
