(More customer reviews)The slap chop and graty are tools...and like any tool, they have their benefits and their drawbacks. I now have these, a v-slicer, and a regular food processor. I use the food processor for large batch jobs, the v-slicer when I am slicing large foods, and the slap-chop when I want to chop small batches.
First, you have to read the instructions and make sure the locking ring (the black bit just under the plunger) is locked down. If it doesn't feel like it's engaging, check to make sure you're turning it the right way. Also, don't overload the chamber. If it feels flimsy, you haven't put it back together properly.
Like any manual tool you have to get a feel for it. When I started with mine, I had some trouble at times.
The upshot: you have a tool that does as well as a powered mini-chopper (if not better, you get finer control), and it's dishwasher safe and cleans thoroughly. Unlike the infomercial, you do have to clean between jobs, but if you have a sink sprayer, you can rinse off the gunk if you're going to use it immediately. Otherwise, you break it down, put it in the dishwasher, and run it.
On the graty: this has so far surpassed my Zyliss crank grater for medium cheeses (cheddar, monterey jack, etc). The Zyliss will still be good for hard cheeses like parmesan, but the graty now works best for cheddar on nachos or chili. There is one thing to remember...if you want results like in the infomercial, REMOVE THE COTTER PIN. You can do without it, and if it turns out I'm wrong, you can get replacements at most hardware stores.

Then he saw this demonstrated at a hunting show and he bought one. He uses it at least once a week to make pico de gallo. I'm happy because I don't have to make the salsa anymore and he loves this thing. We are buying one for each member of our family this christmas. He's had his for a year now and it's still going strong.

I'm sure it works with other things too, but I use it for chopping onions for chili, Spanish rice and other dishes I make often. It eliminates the tears and speeds up the work incredibly. If this one breaks I will be buying my third one.

Progressive Food Processor and Salsa Maker Review

(More customer reviews)This item is a must have in the kitchen. Not only can you make salsa, it chops any vegetables or fruits. I use it whenever I make potato or macaroni salad, or just if I need an onion or celerly chopped for a recipe. I haven't used the whipper attachment, or the basket. My first one finally broke after years of use, and I couldn't live without buying a new one.

(More customer reviews)When I decided to purchase this product, there were only two reviews and both were all right, so I thought I would give it a try. I was specifically looking for something to chop organic matter just a little bit smaller before it went out into the compost bucket on my back porch. In other words, I was not looking for food to be cut very small or uniformly and this processor still doesn't perform-- even after I do most of the chopping for it first. Instead of real chopping blades, it simply has two razor blades. They don't cut much, but after just a few spins they invariably get stuck on something really tough. You know. Like a leaf of spinach or piece of pear. The manufacturers should have just saved the plastic and left the nonskid ring off the bottom; it works so poorly for keeping the processor in place, I exert more effort holding it in place than I do turning the handle.
Don't waste the money on this one!

The handle design has changed (from 2008) and where the handle connects to the lid is now a weak point. out of the 6 that I purchased, 6 broke within the first day. I use these at work for "Salsa Days" and have 3 that we have used since 2008 that still work great. I would recommend against this brand as it is being sold right now...
