Cuisinart SCO-60 Deluxe Stainless Steel Can Opener SCO-60 Review

Cuisinart SCO-60 Deluxe Stainless Steel Can Opener SCO-60

This is the worst joke I have ever had inflicted upon me. We wanted a sturdy, durable can opener that would last more than a year, and this appeared to be the solution. Backed by the Cuisinart brand I was comfident we would be in good shape. It wasn't in stock for 3 or 4 months, but we waited patiently convinced it was the answer to our prayers.
It lasted about a month before it broke. It would not latch onto the cans any longer. It was heavy, solid, made by what I thought was a quality brand name, and it would not work. What a disappointment. But I was confident Cuisinart would set things right, so I e-mailed them.
Wow, what an eye opener about this company! I was told I had to MAIL this heavy object back to them ON MY DIME. Brand new, less than 2 months old, broken and not working, and I am supposed to lay out the heft shipping fee over and above the expensive price tag, which would only be worth the money if the product actually worked.
End of the story, we bought another can opener and it is working fine so far. Eventually it will break as well, nothing is made with any substance any more. We really thought the Cuisinart would last, and if there were any problems at such an early stage they would ship out a replacement, brand new, and prepay the postage for the return like truly reputable companies I have dealt with in the past.
This unit is defective, and their customer service stinks. Save your money, it does not live up to the image, and if you buy it you will get stuck with the postage bill trying to return it. We refused to throw good money after bad, so we are eating the cost. But we now know better than to buy another Cuisinart product in our lifetimes, so that is worth something to us at least.

My wife has Celiac disease and a good gluten free bread is impossible to find ready made. We must bake our own bread if she is going to have a bread that tastes good. We have found the bread mix from Gluten Free Pantry is great. but our old bread machine, a Breadman Ultimate was not turning out a consistant product. It was less than a year old and quit working. Which turned out to be a blessing. Based on our experience with other Cuisinart products and the reviews on Amazon we decided on the Cusinart CBK-100. The gluten free cycle is perfect. It bakes the best gluten free bread we have ever had. We have used Gluten free pantry Sandwich bread mix and also Bob's Red Mill gluten free multigrain mix. WOW! THe bread is so good that I even like it. This bread is light and the crust is perfect. It even is easier to slice. If you are looking for a bread maker that turns out excelent gluten free bread this is the one to buy

After Mixing/Kneading is completed there will be an audible signal of 6 short beeps, before the last rise cycle, indicating the point at which the mixing/kneading is complete. At this point in the bread making process you have the option of removing the kneading paddle, to avoid a small hole in the bottom of your baked loaf, and/or re-shaping the dough, though neither is necessary.
After Breadmaking There will be a series of 15 beeps to signal the end of the baking cycle: the bread display window will read 00:00 and the unit will be in the Warm Cycle.Your bread will be kept warm for 60 minutes to prevent it from becoming soggy. For optimal results, we recommend removing the loaf as soon as the baking cycle is complete and letting it cool on a baking rack. All breads slice best when allowed to cool for a minimum of 30 minutes before slicing. Cuisinart CDF-100 Compact 1.1-Liter Deep Fryer, Brushed Stainless Steel Review

Cuisinart CDF-100 Compact 1.1-Liter Deep Fryer, Brushed Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow, I'm a big fan of fried foods, homemade french fries especially fried in Canola Oil. I've used industrial restaurant sized fryers and worked from a stove top. This little puppy is probably one of the best little friers I've ever seen.
Most of the negative view of this fryer can be solved by simply reading the instruction booklet. Number one complaint, the cord falls off. Well yes it does, and that is by design. The cord is held into it's socket on the fryer side with a magnet. This is so you can unplug the unit without pulling the fryer over and burning yourself with hot oil. It's a common mistake, thinking the cord is broken. If you plug this in, attach the magnet end and don't move the frier, it will not come unplugged.
Number two complaint, the basket is flimsy and falls over itself. It does not do that if you install the handle correctly. You have to squeeze the two sides and slip the pins into two holes and under a tab - the handle will never ever move in this position.
Here's what I love about this appliance, it uses a small amount of oil - around a quart / liter. We don't have fried foods very often, and I don't cook a whole chicken at once. It's just perfect for those side dishes - appetizer mozzarella sticks, egg rolls, jalapeno poppers, etc. You can do chicken fingers, fish sticks, donuts in here. Food cooks evenly and quickly. Heat up time is around 3 or 4 minutes. Cooking time varies a lot, but can be around 3 or 4 minutes.
The cover is ingeneous - it closes down tight around the top and the basket so no splashing of oil happens. Cook on the counter top with no fear of splashing oil everywhere. The carbon filter shouldn't be cleaned every use, and it prevents splashes from coming out of the lid. The clear window, can see that oil will cloud that up over time, but it's handy to see inside.
Frankly, I love this unit. It's well built, solid construction, feels good in use. Cuisinart built a good small fryer in this unit.

Easily make fried chicken, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, or doughnuts with this deep fryer from Cuisinart. By filling to the maximum oil capacity of 1.1 liters, the unit's extra-wide fry basket can accommodate batches up to 3/4 of a pound. Food items float freely for crispy, even cooking, and the fryer's nonstick die-cast frying bowl includes an attached heating element to maintain selected oil temperatures for restaurant-quality results. The 1650-watt deep fryer comes equipped with an adjustable thermostat for temperatures ranging from 325 to 375 degrees F, and the timer can be set for up to 30 minutes. The deep fryer's removable fry basket rests on the basket clip to allow fried foods to drain and cool so there's no excess, clinging oil. For healthier cooking, it fries more food using less oil than most conventional fryers. Other highlights include a removable charcoal filter to trap odors when frying and a dishwasher-safe lid, fry basket, and basket handle for quick cleanup. Housed in brushed stainless steel, the space-saving deep fryer measures 11-1/4 by 8-1/4 by 7-2/5 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

This blender has great power - which is why I bought it and the price was decent. The base (where the motor is) is nice and solid and metal cased. The glass jar is solid and huge. The part which I have BIG complaints about is the bottom part (which you screw the jar and blades into) This part is made of CHEAP THIN PLASTIC plus it is very very difficult to screw on tightly (to prevent leaks when blending) and even more difficult to unscrew once you finish use and want to clean it.

I love the new look! We had the older version for about 6 years. This new one is sleeker and much easier to clean and keep clean (the inside where the grinder sits gets cakey due to condensation). I got it for $149, used Amazon Prime, and had it in a few days! I love it. If you're thinking of getting this grind and brew with stainless carafe, it is nice. Some parts will have to be replaced over the years like the older version, but the taste of the freshly ground coffee every day is worth it. I never pre-heat the carafe like the directions say because that defeats the purpose of the timer. I've never had an issue with the coffee temperature, it's always hot! I also recommend hand-washing over dishwasher. The carbon filters are similar to Brita and can be found for cheap at Kohl's. One other note is it only makes 10 cups as opposed to the typical 12 cups. This is fine for me because it's just me and my husband, but if you need to make a ton of coffee regularly, this may not be a good choice. Overall, I love it and I'm glad I traded up!

Smaller amounts can be brewed without any loss of flavor thanks to the units 1- to 4-cup setting, and its grind-off feature allows for using pre-ground coffee. For added convenience, the coffeemaker provides a large control panel, automatic shut-off for peace of mind, and a 10-cup (5 ounces each) thermal stainless-steel carafe with a generous stay-cool handle and drip-free pouring spout. Accessories include a gold-tone commercial-style permanent filter and a charcoal water filter for removing impurities. Cuisinart 3-Piece Specialty Disc Set for 7- and 11-Cup Processors Review

Average Reviews:

The standard set is invaluable, but there are still many things I couldn't do. With this 3-piece set, I now have almost every blade needed to gourmet my way to food heaven. The julienne disk lets me do things I lack the patience for, while the thick blade lets me slice things like lettuce and tomatoes at a decent thickness, rather than the skimpy 4mm standard blade.
The fine grater is a good touch for finesse. Try doing a whole tangerine or orange by hand without scraping your fingertips and cursing the night. Blood orange never was a good color anyway.
Seriously, the set is a nice addition to the standard set of Cuisinart blades.

Cuisinart HM-70 Power Advantage 7-Speed Hand Mixer, Stainless and White Review

Cuisinart HM-70 Power Advantage 7-Speed Hand Mixer, Stainless and White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought this mixer after reviewing Amazon comments and other Web sites. Amazon users give the Cuisinart mixed reviews, but several other sites, such as Cooks.com give it very high marks -- equal to or better than the KitchenAid. It came down to this mixer or a KitchenAid. I decided to buy the Cuisinart, based on the 3-year warranty. One use tells me the mixer has the power I need. It feels and looks first rate, and the beaters do a great job. I agree with everything the first reviewer said in his excellent review, except I don't think the beater release is all that flimsy, unless you are trying to jam attachements in that aren't made for the unit. I'd be reluctant to use other brand dough hooks or attachments as he suggested. The ones I have from a previous mixer are not only larger on the tips (he filed those down) but are also a bit thicker on the shafts. I think you're asking for trouble if you try to force other units' attachments into this mixer. I rate it four stars because Cuisinart doesn't even make dough hooks for this model -- then again, I've never found dough hooks to be very useful on a hand mixer. Oh yeah, I got this baby at "Bad Breath and Beyond" for $49 after I used the 20% coupon. But mine is ALL CHROME top to bottom -- it looks and feels totally awesome! I'll try to upate this review after I've used the mixer a while longer.
ONE YEAR UPDATE:
The mixer continues to perform as expected. I mainly use it for cookie dough, cake mixes, and mashed potatoes. It slugs through them exactly as I'd want. The "soft" start is really a nice feature as it keeps things from flying all over the kitchen when the beaters start up. I think I saw the price had come down $10 at Bed Bath and Beyond, making the mixer an even better value.

Cuisinart PSC-650 6-1/2-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker Review

Cuisinart PSC-650 6-1/2-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My fiance and I have had in mind for awhile to buy a slow cooker. We received a $100 gift certificate for a retailer - known more for their smarminess than their affordable pricing -- and thought this would be the perfect thing to spend it on. This retailer in particular only had two models of slow cookers to choose from, this one and a 5 quart DeLonghi. I like the DeLonghi brand well enough -- but we thought the cooker was kind of ugly looking. So is the Cuisinart, truth be told.
There were only a handful of features that helped guide our choice. First was the extra quart-and-a-half capacity. The programmable heating settings also seemed like they could be useful. This slow cooker also comes with a cooking rack for when you're doing a roast. Ultimately what convinced us to go with this model was the fact that it's big enough TO do a roast -- you have room enough to do a whole chicken.
When we got home we immediately checked amazon to see how badly we'd been ripped off. Oddly enough -- it was the same price. However -- the reviews shocked us. How can a slow cooker get such horrible reviews when all it has to do is get hot and stay hot? We freaked out a bit and almost ran back to return it.
Like most people who bother to read reviews on amazon -- you're probably aware that typically some of the bad reviews are people just mouthing off, or rating the product based some other bad experience they've had, or they haven't read the user manual for their device and are in the process of breaking it themselves. There might be a bad review or two like this here, for the Cuisinart. But otherwise -- people are saying some frightening things -- namely, that the Cuisinart doesn't cook the food.
As for this slow cooker being badly engineered or made cheaply -- I'm not sure where that comes from. Look at it this way; this cooker holds a huge, thick, 6.5 quart ceramic bowl. The bowl itself can not be confused for cheap. The brushed stainless steel unit that it fits into likewise has to be huge. So, you have this huge steel unit and it's only function is to get hot. Do heating coils take up a lot of room? No, they don't. Are they heavy? No, they're not. If if the opinion of cheap is coming from the fact that the base is big and feels hollow -- then in my opinion they are not being very fair.
The only complaint I can make is that the programmable buttons are keypad type buttons. I would have preferred actual push-in surface buttons, but when you think about it -- the keypad style is much easier to clean up AND prevents moisture from any spilled liquids from getting inside.
Regarding the "permanent" fingerprints -- I'm not sure how that phenomenon can actually take place. I just wiped the unit down and it looks completely new again. Just because it's brushed stainless steel doesn't mean it won't get fingerprints.
Anyway, we decided to keep the cooker and we're glad we did. I threw together some chicken soup last night and we each had a delicious bowl of it this morning. Everything was cooked perfectly -- the carrots were soft and flavorful and the chicken melted away from the bone. I have no complaints or regrets. I would have given it five stars if it were just a tad prettier..

This is a great freezer bowl for making soft serve! I bought an extra one because the key is that you just have to have it in the freezer for at least 24 hours to make sure it is totally frozen. Cuisinart CCJ-100 Citrus Pro Juicer Review

Cuisinart CCJ-100 Citrus Pro Juicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You'd think it would be hard to mess up when designing an item that just juices halved citrus fruit, but they did. And how! There are three annoying features about this machine that interact to provide a supremely annoying user experience.
The first annoying feature about this juicer is that the pour spout juts out a mere 1/4 inch from the side of the machine. Since the machine is rounded and somewhat urn-shaped (fatter on top than on the bottom), you have very little space to get a glass or measuring cup near the body of the machine in order to catch the juice. Keep in mind that some measuring glasses can be rather thick, and you can easily see that this might be a bit of a problem.
Now for the other two problems. I should note that this machine has a decent amount of torque, and can indeed ream out a citrus fruit rather efficiently, leaving nothing but rind. The problem is the three little rubber feet on the bottom cannot stand up to the machine's torque. Push a fruit down on the top and the entire machine jerks to the side, whereupon the spout flinches away from its tiny area of proper juice-dispensing, and juice meets counter. You have to exert a considerable amount of force when pushing down the fruit just to get the thing to stay put. I had to use both hands to do this (one holding the lemon down, one pushing against the side of the machine, leaving none for the measuring cup). It's not an insignificant amount of force; you really have to brace your arms on the thing to keep it still.
Thus comes the third problem, which is the auto-reverse mechanism. About the second or third time you push down on the fruit and activate the machine, it goes the other way (clockwise instead of counterclockwise) in order to get more pulp and juice out of the fruit. However, I haven't figured out how to tell which direction it's going to go next (it's not a simple first time this way, next time that way), so when it decides to change, the machine jerks in the opposite direction of where you were expecting it to go. This operates in opposition to the force you are exerting on the side of the machine trying to keep it from moving. Again, hilarity ensues.
So, all in all, I am NOT impressed with this juicer. Unfortunately, it was the only one at the store. Perhaps another company will see the opportunity here and dare to make a juicer that does not have such an impressively compounded collection of design flaws.

If you like fondue, but find Sterno fuel a pain to use, not to mentioned potentially dangerous... you will love this fondue pot... Just plug it in, turn the knob to the setting you desire and put in the make fondue! Couldn't be easier!
While the power cord is rather short, just get an extension and all is right with the world... And for those concerned that someone tripping over the cord could cause a big mess... forget it... The cord has a megnetic connector that holds it to the thermostat, which incidentally unplugs from the pot itself for cleaning, If someone were to trip over the cord, it just comes undone and all you have to do is set it back in place and the magnet reconnects it... Brilliant!
Oh, and the non-stick surface is great... Those old ceramic fondue pots were a chore to clean... Just wipe this one out with a soft sponge with soap and water and your done!
Yes, Fondue is back and this pot could keep it here to stay this time around!

It's easy to clean and sure looks great on your countertop!
Positive feedback stops here.
I made a mess out of cooking rice (all the negative reviews are true) until I figured that I should use slightly less water than the recommended quantity. After that, I spent 1 year using it nonstop (we eat rice every day).
365 days later, the non-stick bowl is BADLY chipped, like little bubbles that burst on the bottom and left pinhead-sized chips. I swear that I never used anything else than the included plastic scoop (and sponge for cleaning) and never ever scratched it, so I'm 100% sure the non-stick coating quality is to blame.
Add to that that non-stick coating is toxic*, this baby is out of my kitchen as soon as I can afford a Zojirushi. They're not as elegants, but they last forever. For more info on teflon toxicity, visit http://www.ewg.org

Cuisinart CSB-76 Smart Stick Hand Blender Review

Cuisinart CSB-76 Smart Stick Hand Blender

As you can see from others' reviews (esp. on other smartstick models), this product apparently was built with a few plastic parts (instead of metal) that break down after just a bit of use. Then it starts making a horrible grinding noise.
I called Cuisinart, and their in-warranty replacement requires that I pay *THEIR* shipping of the replacement ($10), and also pay to ship the product back to them (probably another $10). Oddly, other people posting reviews here are not being charged.
I called back to ask why some people are having shipping waived, and others aren't. It sounds like they're using a combination of location (e.g. California, which has better customer protection laws) and date of purchase (e.g. if it's less than 6 months old, they're more likely to waive outbound shipping charge.)
IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING THIS PRODUCT: Be aware that the glowingly positive reviews appear to be from people who've just bought the product and haven't hit build quality issues yet.
January 4th 2010 update: The replacement product lasted only 6 months. Same defect. Throwing it out and buying a competitor's product. Never trusting the Cuisinart brand again.
